Trump and North Korea’s Kim in Singapore for historic summit

By prominently showing the Air China jet that flew Kim to Singapore, the reports also made no secret of China’s important role behind the scenes. While Kim and his delegation are now staying at the St. Regis Hotel amid heavy security.

The talks, scheduled for Tuesday, will be the first between a United States and North Korean leader, and follow delicate diplomatic manoeuvres.

Kim smiled broadly Sunday evening as he met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

First the nuts and bolts: How do you protect what many North Koreans consider their single most precious resource, the third member of the Kim family to rule and a direct descendant of North Korea’s worshipped founder Kim Il Sung?

“We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks”, Pompeo said in Singapore on Monday night.

The tests came amid a campaign of “maximum pressure” on North Korea, led by the United States, that tightened economic sanctions and the possibility of military action. It also successfully tested missiles with enough range to reach the United States mainland.

After a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump reversed his earlier comment that nothing would be signed in Singapore to say he could “sign an agreement” to end the Korean War.

The ongoing working-level talks lay a basic foundation for the summit, they continued, but Pyongyang and Washington have agreed to take a “top-down” – rather than bottom up – approach. Kim is, essentially, upsetting two decades of carefully choreographed North Korean statecraft and stepping into the unknown. And Trump is the first USA president willing to sit-down with Kim with so few concessions, believing his self-professed negotiating prowess will guide him though uncharted diplomatic waters.

In a statement, Singapore’s ministry of foreign affairs, said Kim thanked Lee for hosting the summit with Trump.

South Korea estimates the North has 50 kilograms of plutonium, reportedly enough for around 10 bombs, and a “considerable” ability to produce uranium weapons.

Unlike traditional summits between heads of state, where most of the work is completed in advance, US officials say the only thing certain ahead of these talks will be their unpredictability. This trip is the farthest the third-generation North Korean leader has traveled since he took power at the end of 2011, and it has the highest stakes.

“It gives us publicity”.

Wang Peng, an associate research fellow of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, discusses expectations for the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore.

While Trump aides said his battles with Group of 7 economic allies over trade policy show that he will fight for what he wants, others said his inability to deal with global friends bodes ill for his chances with nuclear-armed adversary Kim. North Korea must first disclose all information and resources in its nuclear program to outside inspectors.

That means it could lead to a period of intense and exhausting negotiations with the North Koreans familiar from the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations.

North Korea has long demanded a treaty that may be aimed at getting United States troops off the Korean Peninsula and, eventually, paving the way for a North Korean-led unified Korea.

But in early 2018, North Korea began attempts to improve relations with South Korea by sending a team and delegates to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Kim, who is showing increasing strategic sophistication on the other hand, is likely to be sharply focused on the details since his nuclear arsenal is seen in Pyongyang as the guarantor of his dynastic rule.
