“We all have our own problems”. Last year, Sony Pictures surprised superhero fans by announcing they were developing a live-action Venom movie starring Tom Hardy and directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer. Lethal Protector was the first comic that changed Venom, aka Eddie Brock, from a full-fledged Spider-Man villain into an anti-hero. That’s a fascinating premise, and one that often gets overshadowed by what Venom looks like in the black costume. Despite persistent rumors, it’s not clear whether that deal might permit Spider-Man to swing into Venom, which requires the filmmakers to weave a Spider-Man-free origin.
What follows is a montage of events that ultimately leads to Hardy’s Eddie Brock become the titular, sharp-toothed villainous hero who will hate Spider-Man eventually.
So while the majority of us won’t ever be able to get close to the real Hardy, at least we all can now cuddle a hunk of wax. “Now, you’re something else”, he says in the short but thrilling clip. In fact, if you forget what you know of the character Venom, you could be forgiven to mistake the teaser as that of a sci-fi movie. Sony just released the first teaser for this fall’s Venom, and surely fans will be buzzing about it for weeks. First we see a quick glimpse of Michelle Williams’ Ann Weying in all black during Brock’s “break up” mention.
While Marvel Studios and Disney are rounding home base again with a third Avengers movie in April, Sony has found that their once mighty Spider-Man franchise is looking for a new direction. Venom is out in theaters on October 5, 2018.
Created in 1988 by Marvel Comics, Venom is an alien symbiote that uses human hosts to survive.
