A Winter Storm Warning for Potter County, Pa. also starts at 8 p.m. Monday, but runs until 10 p.m. Tuesday with snow accumulations of 10 to 18 inches possible.
The snowstorm could shatter winter weather records in New York City.
Winter storm warnings are in effect for all of Upstate New York, and for most of the Eastern Seaboard.
The winter weather advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m.to 7 p.m. Monday, followed by a lake-effect snow watch into Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, computer models forecasting the heaviest snow have slowly shifted west over the last several hours, lining that swath up over Worcester.
Verasamy said it is typical to see snow continue to fall through March in Vermont, and Vermonters should refrain from removing snow tires from their cars despite the nicer recent weather. The service’s data goes back to 1893, he said.
On Long Island, a snowfall of 12 to 18 inches was forecast along with equally strong winds and visibility of a quarter-mile or less.
“We are preparing for significant snow and winds and the impacts that those conditions could have on travel and public safety during and after the storm”, said Richard D. Flinn Jr., director of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.
Those higher amounts could been seen primarily across Niagara, Orleans, Wyoming and Chautauqua counties, the weather service reported. Governor Tom Wolf asked residents to avoid travel, adding: “We are also urging everyone to take necessary precautions in the event of widespread power outages, and to check on elderly neighbours in the event of an emergency”.
The Cape and the islands stand to get the least snow with rain in the mix as well.
Some of Tuesday’s cancellations include 880 flights on Southwest Airlines, 616 flights on JetBlue, and 524 flights on American Airlines.
Moderate coastal flooding is expected during high tide, forecasters warned.
