Hurricane Harvey: ‘Unprecedented’ Houston flooding to leave 30000 people homeless

Numerous more than 1 million people who were displaced by Katrina sought refuge in Houston and other Gulf Coast areas in the months and years that followed.

The storm was expected to make a slow turn to the northeast on Tuesday, placing the center just off the middle and upper Texas Gulf coast through Tuesday night before moving inland.

US President Donald Trump warned on Monday that Texas faces a “long and hard road” to recovery after floods triggered by an unprecedented rainstorm, saying there’s “never been anything like it”.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) chief said an estimated 450,000 people had been affected directly and would be expected to file as disaster victims. You could not dream this forecast up.

The storm is set to bring more downpours to Houston, the state’s biggest city, with the life-threatening flooding predicted to peak on Wednesday and Thursday.

Harvey, the most powerful hurricane to strike Texas in more than 50 years, first hit land late on Friday and has killed at least two people. The centre also said “unprecedented flooding” was occurring in south-eastern Texas.

Even before a reporter could ask a question after Monday morning’s practice, Bowser opened his conference expressing his love and support for Houston. That is in addition to upwards of 90 centimeters of rain that has already fallen in some areas, including around the city of Houston. Average rainfall totals will end up around one metre.

The city of Houston had received some 56,000 calls to 911 as of mid-day Sunday.

“Thank God, we’re here”, one woman said.

The next and perhaps greatest concern is the potential for catastrophic flooding as the rain from the storm continues over the next few days.

An additional 1,000 National Guard members were expected be sent to Houston on Monday, Abbott said. Of course the highways and the streets have flooded, but nothing compares to how it is now.

“Feeling like an ant in an anthill today”, Joshua Kutryk said on Twitter.

MA emergency responders have headed to Houston to assist with the catastrophic flooding in the Texas city caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Flood damage in Texas from Hurricane Harvey may equal that from Katrina, one of the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, an insurance research group said on Sunday.

Long said in addition to search and rescue, the next objective was to “stabilize” disaster survivors. We will remain here as long as we are needed. “Right now, this mission is a life-safety, life-sustaining mission”.

Mr Abbott added his second goal was to ensure access to necessities such as food, water and power, with electricity in the process of being restored in areas that most desperately need it.
