‘Guardians’ sequel blasts off to $17M on opening night

The Guardians of the Galaxy universe has room for one more in their family of misfits, and French actress Pom Klementieff is ready to fill the shoes of Mantis. A sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is being developed with James Gunn returning to write and direct the film. Pfft. What is that? Guardians of the Galaxy earned $94 million on its first weekend, so if the estimates hold, then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will exit its first weekend having earned about 50 percent the earnings of its predecessor.

With the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” taking place four years after “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, fans have been wondering about when does the third film would take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline. There’s clearly something there as the two nearly kissed in the first film, but will they make it official here?

This is probably the most interesting one because of the way that it came together. And the jokes are not forced. Bautista is the latest to prove WWE wrestlers can act if they’re given the right project. Nothing is out of place.

The movie starts to falter in the second part when all the characters are introduced.

“You’ll see! You’ll see!” she teased. There are no awkward serious rallying scenes like there were in the first “Guardians”, and Chris Pratt gets more to do when Star-Lord meets his father, played by Kurt Russell.

Walking out of the cinema after watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, I was discussing with a friend how much bigger this film felt with the extra character beats and broader scope – nearly at the limit of what could be manageable. It’s the same crew as before, with one significant adjustment – Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord; Gamora, the green-skinned swordswoman; Drax, the behemoth; and Rocket, the raccoon.

The film explores the dysfunctional relationship of Quill’s family and how he deals with finally meeting his biological father, Ego. But Ego is not the nice guy that he pretends to be.

There is a bunch of well-conceptualised action sequences that are outrageous in design and fun to look at. The sibling rivalry between Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) is also dealt with.

There are several after credits scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but eagle-eyed fans can also spot some things during the actual credits. What else do you want?
